Extra help and the impacts on my Part D plan benefit!

Your membership with us will not change just because you are getting extra help in paying for your prescription drug coverage. You will receive the same benefits as someone who is not receiving extra help.

As a member who receives extra help paying for your prescription drug coverage, you may receive lower:

  • Monthly premiums
  • Prescription co-payments
  • Yearly deductible

What extra help is available?

If you have limited income and resources, you may qualify for extra help from the government in paying your monthly premium, yearly deductible, and prescription co-payments and co-insurances. Resources include your savings and stocks, but not your home or car. This extra help will count toward your out-of-pocket costs.

Do I qualify for extra help?

There are two ways you may qualify for extra help.

1. You automatically qualify for extra help and don’t need to apply if you:

  • have full coverage from a state Medicaid program.
  • get help from Medicaid paying your Medicare premiums (belong to a Medicare Savings Program).
  • get Supplemental Security Income benefits.

You can get additional information regarding how you automatically qualify for extra help. Medicare mails letters monthly to people who automatically qualify for extra help.

2. You may apply and qualify if your annual income is below $16,245, single with no dependents (or $21,855 if married, and living with your spouse and no dependents). In addition, your resources (including your savings and stocks, but not your home or car) must not exceed $12,510 (or $25,010 if married and living with spouse). How much extra help you get will depend on your income and resources.

Status Income Resources
Single Less than $16,245 Less than $12,510
Married (living with spouse) Less than $21,855 Less than $25,010

The above income and resource amounts are for 2009 and will change in 2010. If you live in Alaska or Hawaii, or pay at least half of the living expenses of dependent family members, income limits are higher.
